Abia Steps Up Health Training Standards, Hosts National Accreditation Bodies
The Abia State Government has intensified efforts to strengthen professional healthcare training and raise standards across its health institutions as the state advances accreditation processes for key medical training programmes.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, September 21, 2026, while briefing pressmen at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu revealed that the State Ministry of Health recently hosted the Optometrists and Opticians Registration Council of Nigeria during an accreditation visit, marking another step towards ensuring that optometry training and practice in the state meet required professional standards.
He further disclosed that the National Board for Technical Education also visited the state as part of accreditation processes for training programmes in optometry and nursing sciences.
The accreditation exercise covers nursing training programmes at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) campus, as well as the Abiriba campus of the College of Nursing Sciences.
The development underscores the state’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its healthcare workforce by improving the quality, recognition and regulatory compliance of institutions responsible for training future health professionals.
