Atrocity Survivors in Benue Recount Horrific Attacks as Over 600,000 Displaced Christians Remain in IDP Camps
A recent visit to several Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Benue State has revealed heartbreaking testimonies from victims of violent attacks that have devastated communities and forced thousands from their ancestral homes. The camps, currently sheltering over 600,000 displaced Christians according to humanitarian workers, continue to swell as insecurity persists across affected areas.
During the visit, survivors narrated painful experiences of unimaginable brutality that have forever altered their lives. Many described the trauma of watching loved ones killed before being forced to flee with nothing but the determination to stay alive.
One survivor, a pregnant mother, recounted how armed attackers invaded her community, murdered her husband and five children in her presence, and left her barely able to escape with her unborn child. In another testimony, a woman explained through tears how her entire family was murdered and her baby violently taken from her womb in the course of the attack.
Men were not spared. Another victim recalled how his family was hacked to death while he stood helpless, suffering severe injuries that left his arm permanently deformed.
Human rights advocates warn that such attacks have pushed entire communities into prolonged displacement, creating humanitarian crises across Benue and other states in the Middle Belt region. They insist that displaced families deserve immediate protection, justice, and the right to return to their ancestral lands without fear.
Local and international observers continue to call for urgent government intervention, strengthened security measures, and support for displaced persons struggling with trauma, hunger, and loss.
For the thousands in crowded IDP camps, the hope remains that one day they will return to their homes in peace, free from the violence that upr
ooted them.
