Dr. Kelechi Anosike Floors John Okiyi Kalu, Others in Abia PDP Governorship Primaries.
Political tensions erupted within the Abia State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party following the emergence of Dr. Kelechi Anosike as the winner of the party’s governorship primaries, defeating former Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, alongside other contenders in a contest that has already stirred reactions across the state.
The outcome of the primaries has been described by many party observers as one of the biggest political upsets within the PDP in recent years, especially considering the long-standing influence and visibility of Chief John Okiyi Kalu in the affairs of the party.
Okiyi Kalu, who has consistently identified himself as a loyal member of the PDP since 1999, was widely seen by many supporters as one of the prominent voices and strategic stakeholders of the party in Abia State. However, the emergence of Dr. Kelechi Anosike appears to have altered the political calculations within the party structure.
In the results announced at the conclusion of the exercise, Dr. Anosike polled 16,543 votes to defeat his closest challenger, John Okiyi Kalu, who garnered 3,100 votes.
The outcome positions Dr. Anosike as the PDP’s flagbearer for the 2027 Abia State governorship election, setting the stage for what is expected to be a keenly contested political battle in Abia State.
Although the primaries initially generated mixed reactions among party loyalists, supporters of Dr. Anosike have described the outcome as a reflection of a new political direction within the party.
Speaking with our correspondent during a telephone conversation, one of Okiyi Kalu’s supporters expressed disappointment over the outcome, describing the defeat as a major embarrassment to party veterans who have remained active in the PDP for decades.
The supporter argued that it was shocking for what he described as a political newcomer to defeat a figure many party faithful regard as one of the present leaders and authorities within the PDP in Abia State.
The development is already generating intense debate among political stakeholders, with many observers suggesting that the result may signal a major shift in the internal power dynamics of the party ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.
Political analysts believe the victory of Dr. Kelechi Anosike could further deepen conversations surrounding loyalty, influence, grassroots acceptance, and the changing leadership structure within the Abia PDP.
As party members continue to react to the outcome of the primaries, attention is now focused on how aggrieved camps within the party will respond in the coming days and whether the development could affect unity within the opposition party ahead of the 2027 g
overnorship contest.
