Ex-OnlyFans Model, Courtney Clenney Sentenced to Six Years Over Fatal Stabbing of Nigerian-American Christian Obumseli
Nigerian-American man Christian Tobechukwu “Toby” Obumseli, who was fatally stabbed by his American girlfriend, Courtney Clenney, in Miami, United States, in 2022, has finally seen his killer sentenced after more than four years of legal proceedings.
Clenney, a 30-year-old former OnlyFans model, pleaded guilty on Monday to manslaughter with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to six years in prison, followed by five years of probation, according to Fox News.
The sentence brings a significant development to a case that attracted widespread attention in the United States and beyond, following the death of the 27-year-old Obumseli at the couple’s luxury apartment in Miami’s Edgewater neighbourhood on April 3, 2022.
Clenney had initially been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Obumseli’s death. However, under the plea agreement, the charge was resolved through a guilty plea to manslaughter with a deadly weapon.
Because Clenney has already spent nearly four years in custody since her arrest in August 2022, she is expected to serve approximately two more years behind bars before beginning her five-year probation.
As part of the terms following her release, Clenney will also be required to undergo mental health and substance abuse evaluations and participate in any recommended treatment.
Prosecutors have further indicated that they will oppose any effort by Clenney to financially benefit from Obumseli’s death.
“We do believe that nobody should benefit financially from murdering somebody,” Assistant State Attorney Shawn Abuhoff said.
For Obumseli’s family, however, the sentence could never adequately compensate for the loss of a son, brother and loved one whose life was cut short.
The family told the court that Obumseli’s death had created a permanent void in their lives, stressing that no legal outcome could restore what they had lost.
“No sentence, no plea can bring back my son to me,” his mother said.
A representative of the family described Obumseli as someone who “loved deeply” and said he remained in what the family considered a destructive relationship despite previous incidents of violence.
“Your actions have left the Obumseli family with a void that can never be filled. A chair where a family gathers for holidays will always remain empty,” the representative said.
The family also emphasised that Obumseli had a promising future ahead of him and that his life carried meaning, arguing that he had been “robbed of all those things” while Clenney still had the opportunity to continue with hers.
Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said the plea agreement allowed Obumseli’s family to finally hear Clenney accept responsibility for his death. She added that the agreement was reached in consultation with, and with the approval of the family
Obumseli, who hailed from the Dallas-Plano area of Texas, attended Plano East High School before proceeding to Texas Tech University. He later moved to Miami, where he began a relationship with Clenney.
His death followed a domestic dispute at the couple’s apartment. Clenney had maintained that she acted in self-defence, but prosecutors presented evidence they said pointed to a broader pattern of violence within the relationship.
The case subsequently became a subject of intense public discussion, particularly after old social media posts attributed to Obumseli resurfaced following his death. His family condemned the views expressed in those posts but maintained its demand for accountability over his killing.
Beyond the criminal proceedings, Obumseli’s family also pursued a civil lawsuit against Clenney and companies associated with the apartment building, alleging battery and inadequate security. The claims against Clenney were resolved before the criminal plea agreement was announced.
With Clenney’s guilty plea and sentencing, the criminal case that has remained in the public spotlight for more than four years has reached a major conclusion.
For the Obumseli family, the outcome closes a lengthy legal chapter, but the grief over the loss of Christian Tobechukwu “Toby” Obumseli remains, a life they say was filled with promise and a future that can never be recovered.
