Ghana Retaliates Against Israel as Three Israelis Deported Following Alleged “Ill Treatment” of Ghanaian Nationals at Tel Aviv Airport
In a dramatic escalation of diplomatic tensions, the Ghanaian government has deported three Israeli nationals in response to what it described as the “mistreatment” of its citizens by Israeli authorities.
“Following the ill treatment and unjustified deportation of three Ghanaian nationals by Israeli authorities, the government of Ghana has been compelled to retaliate by deporting three Israelis who arrived in Ghana earlier today,” Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday.
The Ministry emphasized that Ghana remains committed to protecting the dignity of its citizens, adding that it will “continue to safeguard the dignity of its nationals and also that of other nationals.”
The diplomatic spat traces back to Sunday, when several Ghanaian nationals arriving at Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv city were reportedly subjected to “inhumane and traumatic” treatment. Accra described the actions of Israeli authorities as appalling, noting that Ghanaian travellers had been “deliberately targeted” for intense scrutiny.
Among those affected were four members of a parliamentary delegation attending the Annual International Cybersecurity Conference in Tel Aviv.
Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that these individuals were detained without justification and were only released after more than five hours of what the ministry called “strenuous diplomatic intervention.”
The remaining three Ghanaian travellers were deported on the next available flight and have since safely returned to Ghana.
In its latest communication, Accra stated that it had agreed to “resolve the matter amicably” with Israel, signaling a willingness to de-escalate tensions while firmly defending the rights of its citizens abroad.
