GOV. ALEX OTTI SPEAKS TO ABIANS: Road Infrastructure Remains Top Priority as Abia Completes 414 Roads in Three Years
The Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has reaffirmed that road infrastructure remains one of the cardinal priorities of his administration, stressing that quality roads play a critical role in driving economic growth, improving transportation, boosting commerce, and enhancing the living conditions of citizens across the state.
Governor Otti made the disclosure on Friday, during the May edition of the monthly media parley, tagged “Governor Otti Speaks to Abians”, where he reviewed key achievements as his administration marks three years in office.
Speaking on the administration’s infrastructural strides, the Governor disclosed that within the last three years, his government has successfully completed 414 road projects spanning approximately 864.12 kilometres across different parts of Abia State.
The massive road intervention, according to him, is part of the administration’s broader vision to rebuild critical infrastructure, open up rural and urban communities for economic activities, and improve connectivity across the state.
Governor Otti further revealed that several of the completed road projects are scheduled to be commissioned as part of activities lined up to commemorate the third anniversary of his administration.
The Governor noted that beyond the completed projects, work is actively ongoing on several other roads across the state.
“There are another 82 roads under construction and they are at different stages of completion,” he announced.
He explained that the ongoing projects cover about 212 kilometres and are not limited to road construction alone, as they also include complementary infrastructure such as drainage systems and street lighting aimed at ensuring durability, safety, and environmental sustainability.
Governor Otti stated that his administration has also put in place sustainable maintenance mechanisms to preserve the quality of roads already constructed, including the adoption of direct labour initiatives and the implementation of a zero-pothole policy.
According to him, the state government remains committed not only to building new roads but also to ensuring that existing ones remain motorable and economically beneficial to the people.
“Of course, we don’t need to over-emphasise the importance of roads because they reduce transport costs, improve business efficiency, accelerate trade and commerce and most importantly create jobs,” Governor Otti said.
The Governor further emphasized that the ongoing infrastructure projects have equally contributed to strengthening the engineering and technical capacity of indigenous professionals and contractors engaged in various construction activities across the state.
Observers have continued to describe the administration’s aggressive road construction drive as one of the most visible achievements of the present government, especially in areas that had suffered years of neglect and poor accessibility.
