Gov. Alex Otti’s Sanitation Revolution Transforms Abia Into One of Nigeria’s Cleanest States
The Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has declared that the sweeping sanitation reforms introduced by his administration have transformed Abia into one of the cleanest states in Nigeria, marking a significant departure from the environmental challenges that once plagued the state.
Governor Otti made the disclosure on Friday during the May edition of the monthly media parley, “Governor Otti Speaks to Abians,” where he highlighted major milestones and achievements recorded by his administration as it marks three years in office.
The Governor recalled that upon assumption of office, his administration immediately declared a state of emergency on sanitation as part of urgent efforts to restore cleanliness, improve public health standards, and rebuild the environmental image of the state.
He noted that the sanitation initiative has yielded visible and measurable results across major cities and communities in Abia, especially in Aba and Umuahia, where waste management and environmental maintenance have witnessed remarkable improvement.
Governor Otti further disclosed that over 13 tonnes of waste are now being evacuated weekly through coordinated sanitation operations across the state, a development he described as evidence of the government’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and urban renewal.
The Governor also revealed that the sanitation reforms have created massive employment opportunities for residents, stating that more than 2,000 jobs have been generated through the activities and operations of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA).
He emphasized that beyond keeping the environment clean, the sanitation drive has also contributed to economic empowerment, youth engagement, and the promotion of healthier living conditions for Abians.
Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to sustain the momentum already achieved in environmental management, stressing that a clean environment remains critical to economic growth, public health, investment attraction, and the overall transformation agenda of his government.
The Governor maintained that his administration would continue to strengthen sanitation policies and support agencies responsible for environmental protection in order to ensure that Abia remains a model state in cleanliness, orderliness, and sustainable urban development.
