“If You Are a Young Lady and You Don’t Have a Job or Anything You Are Doing, Don’t Get Married” — Nigerian Prophetess Advises Women
A Nigerian prophetess has stirred conversations on social media after advising young women to prioritize building a career, learning a skill, running a business or establishing a reliable source of income before venturing into marriage.
The prophetess stressed that financial independence remains an important factor in helping women maintain confidence and make crucial decisions about their lives, particularly when faced with difficult or unhealthy situations in marriage.
According to her, some women remain trapped in relationships that no longer bring them happiness, not necessarily because they are unable or unwilling to leave, but because they are worried about the uncertainty of starting life all over again without a job, income or personal means of survival.
“If you are a young lady and you don’t have a job or anything you are doing, don’t get married. A man can navigate his life, but a woman may find it difficult to do so within marriage. That’s why you see some women who get married to someone who is not right for them staying in the marriage. It’s not that they can’t leave, but they are thining about how to come out and start all over again,” she said.
The cleric encouraged young women to invest in themselves and become financially independent before making the commitment of marriage. She explained that having a career, business, profession, skill or other meaningful pursuit could provide women with greater confidence and give them more options when making important decisions concerning their future and relationships.
Her comments have since generated mixed reactions, with many social media users agreeing that women should have their own lives and sources of income outside marriage.
Reacting to the post, one user, @Cay, wrote: “Make she rest, you can be lucky as a young girl and marry a rich man but that one no mean say make you no get work sha”
Another user, @OneclickAfrica, supported the prophetess’s position, writing: “She’s making sense 👏 nobody likes anyone that is idle, both gender but for a woman I’ll advise you have your own life going on aside from the fact that you’re married, you need it to grow, it’s very important.”
@Cay also added: “Na so them go dey mislead young girls, you can be lucky as a girl and marry a wealthy man, but because I say you can be lucky that one no mean say make you no work oh”
