ISUIKWUATO: ARMY ARRESTS 19 SUSPECTED PIPELINE VANDALS, REJECTS BRIBE OFFERS
…as Soldiers Nab Suspects Loading Stolen Pipelines Onto Trailer, Just Days After Mayor, Hon. Chinedu Ekeke’s Warning
Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 143 Battalion have arrested 19 suspected vandals allegedly caught stealing underground pipeline infrastructure along the Nkwonta axis of Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, in a major security breakthrough that has earned commendation from the council’s Executive Mayor, Hon. Chinedu Ekeke.
The arrest, which took place on Friday, October 23, 2026, came just days after Mayor Ekeke issued a stern warning against the destruction and theft of public property, raising concerns over the growing attacks on valuable infrastructure and other assets within the local government area.
The suspects were reportedly apprehended while attempting to load the allegedly stolen pipeline materials onto a heavy-duty trailer. Their arrest represents a significant development in ongoing efforts to combat vandalism, protect public infrastructure and strengthen security across Isuikwuato.
Speaking to the press on Monday, October 26, Mayor Ekeke praised the troops for their swift response, professionalism and commitment to duty, particularly commending the Commanding Officer of the 143 Battalion, Lt. Col. A. M. Rabe, and the leader of the company responsible for the operation, Lt. F. A. Bashir.
The mayor expressed particular satisfaction with the soldiers’ refusal to compromise their duties despite alleged attempts by the suspects to bribe them with substantial sums of money.
According to the account of the incident, the soldiers rejected the offers and proceeded with the arrests, demonstrating integrity and a firm commitment to enforcing the law.
Ekeke described the soldiers’ conduct as an example of the discipline, accountability and impartiality expected of security personnel entrusted with protecting lives and property.
The successful operation comes against the backdrop of the mayor’s recent concerns over repeated incidents of vandalism targeting public assets across Isuikwuato.
In his earlier warning, Ekeke highlighted an alleged attempt to steal materials from the council’s pig farm, the vandalism of high-tension electricity cables along the route from Amiyi Obinaohia to Abia State University (ABSU), and other reported attacks on valuable infrastructure.
Following those incidents, the mayor called on parents and guardians to pay closer attention to the activities of their children and wards, emphasising that community vigilance and collective responsibility were essential to preventing criminal activities.
He stressed that the protection of public infrastructure requires cooperation among residents, community leaders and security agencies, warning that the destruction or theft of public assets undermines development and imposes additional costs on government and the wider community.
The 19 suspects reportedly comprise one Sergeant Daniel Emeka, a police officer attached to the Ovim Division of the Nigeria Police Force, a truck driver, a bus driver, a conductor, 12 loaders, and two panel beaters or metal cutters.
The reported involvement of a serving police officer has added another dimension to the case, although the allegations against all the suspects remain subject to investigation and due legal process.
Following their arrest, the suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Mayor Ekeke assured residents that the suspects would face the full weight of the law if found culpable, reaffirming his administration’s determination to protect public and private property and ensure that those responsible for vandalism are held accountable.
The latest development sends a strong message that the destruction and illegal removal of public infrastructure will not be tolerated in Isuikwuato. Beyond the immediate financial losses, pipeline theft and other forms of vandalism can disrupt essential services, threaten livelihoods, compromise public safety and divert resources from projects intended to improve the lives of residents.
With the suspects now in NSCDC custody, attention is expected to shift to the outcome of the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.
The operation also reinforces the mayor’s appeal for residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities, as the protection of public assets remains a shared responsibility between government, security agencies
and the communities they serve.
