Manchester City Hit With Huge Blow as Club Found Guilty of 114 Financial Breaches
Manchester City have been dealt a major blow after the club were reportedly found guilty of 114 out of 115 financial regulation charges brought against them by the Premier League.
The ruling, reported by The Athletic, follows an extensive investigation into alleged breaches covering several seasons and could have significant consequences for the reigning English football powerhouse.
The Premier League had previously presented a charge sheet containing 115 complaints against Manchester City, alleging widespread violations of its financial regulations. The charges covered a period stretching across several years, with 54 of the complaints relating to the club’s alleged failure to provide accurate financial information between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons.
The investigation has been ongoing for an extended period, with Premier League chairman Richard Masters previously acknowledging that the process was taking considerably longer than initially anticipated.
Despite the latest ruling, the matter is far from concluded. Manchester City are expected to appeal the decision of the specially selected committee, meaning the club’s legal battle with the Premier League could continue.
The eventual punishment has also yet to be determined, leaving the club facing considerable uncertainty over what the ruling could mean for its domestic record.
Under Rule W.51 of the Premier League handbook, a range of sanctions is available to the league. These include a formal reprimand, financial penalties, points deductions and, in the most severe scenario, expulsion from the Premier League.
One of the most consequential aspects of the rules is that any points deduction does not necessarily have to apply only to the current season. Depending on the final decision and applicable sanctions, penalties could potentially be imposed retrospectively.
That possibility could open the door to an extraordinary reassessment of Manchester City’s past campaigns, including the potential loss of titles if retrospective sporting sanctions were ultimately imposed.
For now, however, no final punishment has been announced, and Manchester City’s expected appeal means the case remains subject to further legal and sporting proceedings.
