Nigeria Moves Closer To Acquiring 12 AH-1Z Viper Attack Helicopters In Major US Defence Deal
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s attack-helicopter capability with the signing of an agreement towards the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from Bell Textron in Amarillo, Texas, United States.
The milestone was recorded during a signing ceremony led by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, who headed a delegation of senior Nigerian Air Force officials to the Bell Textron facility.
The development represents another major phase in the implementation of the Nigeria-United States Government defence cooperation programme and reflects the Federal Government’s broader efforts to modernise the Armed Forces and enhance the country’s capacity to respond to evolving security threats.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the acquisition forms part of ongoing initiatives aimed at modernising Nigeria’s military capabilities and strengthening the nation’s defence and security architecture.
Speaking during the ceremony, Aneke said the acquisition would significantly contribute to improving the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Armed Forces, particularly by providing the Nigerian Air Force with additional modern platforms capable of supporting operations in synergy with ground forces.
“The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters represents an important milestone in our continuing efforts to build a more capable, professional and mission-ready Nigerian Air Force,” he said.
The Chief of the Air Staff explained that the programme was consistent with his command philosophy of maintaining a highly motivated and professional force capable of delivering decisive airpower effects while working closely with surface forces to achieve national security objectives.
He further emphasised that the acquisition of new platforms must ultimately translate into measurable improvements in operational effectiveness, stressing the importance of ensuring that the capabilities being procured directly support Nigeria’s national security requirements.
Aneke also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his “strategic leadership, unwavering support and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s defence and security architecture.”
He acknowledged the continued cooperation of the United States Government, Bell Textron, Programme Management Air 276 and other stakeholders involved in the AH-1Z Viper programme, noting that sustained collaboration would remain critical to the successful implementation of the acquisition.
“Sustained defence cooperation, technical collaboration and capability development remain essential to the successful implementation of the programme,” The CAS said.
As part of the visit, the Nigerian Air Force delegation inspected the AH-1Z Viper production line at the Bell Textron facility, providing the Nigerian officials with an opportunity to observe aspects of the manufacturing process for the attack helicopters being acquired under the programme.
The AH-1Z Viper is designed as a dedicated attack helicopter, providing capabilities for armed reconnaissance, close air support and other combat missions. Its planned introduction would add another layer to the Nigerian Air Force’s existing helicopter fleet and could expand the service’s ability to provide air support to troops operating in challenging security environments.
The latest development comes amid a broader expansion and renewal of Nigeria’s military aviation assets, as the Federal Government continues to pursue the acquisition of new aircraft and helicopters while strengthening partnerships with international defence manufacturers and governments.
It also comes only six days after the Nigerian Air Force took delivery of five new helicopters as part of the Federal Government’s continuing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s airpower capabilities and improve the Armed Forces’ response to security threats.
The five helicopters comprised three AW-109 Trekker B helicopters manufactured by Leonardo Helicopters of Italy and two H-125 helicopters manufactured by Airbus Helicopters.
The latest AH-1Z Viper milestone therefore forms part of a wider pattern of investment in Nigeria’s military aviation infrastructure, with the NAF seeking to expand its fleet, introduce newer platforms and improve the ability of its personnel to conduct air operations in support of national security.
The NAF said the milestone underscores the commitment of the Federal Government and the service to developing modern airpower capabilities while deepening strategic defence partnerships with international allies.
With the proposed acquisition of the 12 AH-1Z Viper helicopters, the Nigeria-United States defence cooperation programme is entering another important phase, with the focus now expected to remain on the successful implementation of the programme and the eventual delivery and integration of the new plat
forms into the Nigerian Air Force.
