Nigerian Students Make History, Win Gold at 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in China
Nigeria has recorded a historic milestone on the global academic stage after its student team clinched the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China.
The four-member Team Nigeria, made up of Oluwadamilola Adeolu, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi, and Maryam Yusuf, emerged victorious against top young spellers from around the world, marking a memorable debut for the country at the prestigious international competition.
The students qualified to represent Nigeria after outstanding performances at the Nigeria Spelling Bee and the African Spelling Bee Championship, where they proved their academic brilliance and earned the right to compete on the world stage.
Adding to the nation’s success, Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf, both students of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin, also secured individual medals for their exceptional performances during the competition.
Nigeria’s triumph is particularly significant as it came during the country’s first-ever participation in the Spelling Bee World Cup, underscoring the growing global competitiveness of Nigerian students.
