The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has officially appointed Hon. Obi Aguocha, the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives, to engage with the Federal Government of Nigeria on his behalf.

The appointment was contained in a letter personally endorsed by Kanu’s Lead Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, and addressed to Hon. Aguocha. The correspondence, titled “RE: Letter of Authority to Interface With The Federal Government on Behalf of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” confers on the lawmaker the mandate to open direct communication with the government concerning Kanu’s prolonged detention and trial.

According to the letter, “We are Solicitors to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu (hereafter: Our Client), on whose behalf and firm instruction we write this Letter, conveying the following to you. That you are hereby authorized by our Client to approach the Federal Government, with a view to resolving the matter of our Client’s continued detention, prosecution, and all issues related thereto.”

The letter further stated that Hon. Aguocha has the liberty and authority to exercise independent judgment in determining what best serves Kanu’s interest, noting that, “in your interactions with the Federal Government, you shall have the free hand and authority to exercise your discretion and independent judgment to decide what is in our Client’s best interest.”

Beyond engaging in dialogue, Kanu’s directive to the lawmaker emphasizes exploring a political settlement to secure his release and the discontinuation of his ongoing prosecution.

The letter stated: “In particular, you have the authority of our Client to approach and engage the Federal Government, with a view to seeking a political solution to the matter of his release from detention and discontinuance of his prosecution.”

Ejimakor added that Aguocha would coordinate with Kanu’s legal team throughout the engagement process, ensuring that all interactions align with ongoing legal and diplomatic efforts.

“You shall work in close collaboration and coordination with the undersigned Counsel on all your engagements with the government,” the letter read.

Concluding the communication, the counsel expressed appreciation for the lawmaker’s willingness to undertake the task, stating, “While thanking you for your commitment to this task, please be assured of our Client’s abiding respect for your person and high office. If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned.”

  • The appointment of Hon. Aguocha, who has been an outspoken advocate for dialogue and peace in the Southeast, signals a new phase in the efforts to secure a political resolution to Nnamdi Kanu’s prolonged detention, a matter that has drawn both national and international attention.
