Oxford University Press Announces ‘Rage Bait’ as 2025 Oxford Word of the Year
Oxford University Press (OUP) has officially declared rage bait as the Oxford Word of the Year 2025, marking the term as a defining expression of global online culture and digital behaviour over the past year.
The selection followed a competitive shortlist that included rage bait, aura farming, and biohack, three entries that captured the evolving nature of modern communication, social discourse, and lifestyle trends.
According to OUP, the trio of contenders reflected the dominant themes shaping public conversations throughout 2024 and into 2025.
More than 30,000 people participated in a three-day public vote, contributing to the final decision. While votes played a central role, language experts also reviewed public sentiment and conducted in-depth analysis of usage data drawn from a wide range of digital and linguistic sources. After evaluating the trends, frequency, and cultural impact of each term, the experts ultimately selected rage bait as the most influential word of the year.
The choice underscores the increasing prevalence of emotionally charged online content designed to provoke reactions, a phenomenon that has deeply shaped digital interactions, media consumption, and public debate across platforms.
With this announcement, rage bait now joins the growing list of words that not only define the times but also offer insight into shifting societal behaviour in an ever-connect
ed world.
