POWER MINISTER, BAYO ADELABU RESIGNS FROM TINUBU’S CABINET AHEAD OF 2027 OYO GOVERNORSHIP BID
The Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, has formally tendered his resignation from the cabinet of President Bola Tinubu, signaling a major political shift ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
Adelabu, in a letter dated April 22, 2026, addressed his resignation to the President through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, confirming that his exit from office will take effect on April 30, 2026.
The Oyo-born politician explained that his decision is driven by the need to fully concentrate on his long-standing governorship ambition in Oyo State, a political pursuit he revealed has been in motion since 2016. He traced key milestones in his career, including his tenure as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and his resignation from that role in 2018, as part of a deliberate path toward achieving this goal.
Adelabu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, acknowledging the trust placed in him to contribute to national development, particularly in driving reforms within Nigeria’s power sector. He emphasized that his resignation is structured to ensure a seamless transition, aligning with provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2026.
His exit comes at a time when the nation continues to grapple with persistent electricity challenges. Only weeks prior, Adelabu had publicly addressed Nigerians, expressing regret over the widespread power outages that have affected households and businesses across the country.
He had assured citizens that corrective measures were underway to stabilize electricity supply, projecting noticeable improvements in the near term. While describing the outages as temporary, he acknowledged the strain they have placed on Nigerians, especially during the dry season when demand for electricity rises significantly due to increased cooling needs.
