An old video of Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, the member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has resurfaced online, drawing renewed attention to his composure and eloquence during legislative proceedings.
The clip, which dates back to sometime in June 2025, captures a defining moment when a sudden power outage interrupted his presentation on the floor of the House. Rather than pause, the lawmaker pressed on seamlessly, continuing his address without hesitation, an act many observers now describe as symbolic of resilience in the face of systemic challenges.
That moment has taken on fresh relevance following his recent appearance at a public hearing, where he defended a bill seeking to establish a Federal Technical and Vocational Training Centre in Aba.
Speaking during the session, Ikwechegh stressed the far-reaching benefits of equipping Nigerians with practical, skill-based education. He described Aba as a city already distinguished by the ingenuity and craftsmanship of its people, noting that with the right level of investment and institutional support, it holds the potential to rival global industrial hubs.
He argued that the proposed centre would not only strengthen local capacity but also position Aba as a major driver of production and innovation on the continent.
Recounting the earlier blackout incident, Ikwechegh said the disruption did not weaken his resolve. Instead, he noted, it highlighted the urgency of building a workforce capable of addressing Nigeria’s infrastructural deficits, including persistent electricity challenges from within.
The lawmaker further linked national economic strength to productivity, emphasizing that countries such as China, India, Japan, and the United States achieved sustainable growth by prioritizing local industry and empowering their workforce.
According to him, Nigeria must follow a similar path by investing deliberately in human capital and local content development.
Ikwechegh expressed optimism that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will give assent to the bill, describing it as aligned with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and a practical step toward economic revitalization.
He concluded by reaffirming his belief in Aba’s enduring potential, portraying the city as a beacon of resilience, industry, and promise, qualities he insists can be harnessed to transform it into a con
