President Tinubu Set to Address World Leaders at UNGA, Showcase Nigeria’s Reform Successes and Push Regional Security Agenda
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will return to the global stage this September as he prepares to address world leaders at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where he is expected to present Nigeria’s reform agenda and champion fresh regional security initiatives aimed at strengthening border policing across West Africa.
The development was disclosed by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, after briefing the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on preparations for the annual global gathering.
According to Ibrahim, President Tinubu has accepted the invitation to participate in this year’s UNGA and will use the high-profile platform to showcase the achievements of his administration’s economic and governance reforms before the international community.
“I came in from New York to speak with the President in preparation for the United Nations General Assembly.
“The President has generously agreed to attend the UN meeting. It is significant because Mr President has a speech to deliver to the whole world on the reform successes recorded in Nigeria. That has already been scheduled for September,” Ibrahim said.
The ambassador explained that beyond delivering Nigeria’s official address, President Tinubu is expected to engage in several high-level side events involving global leaders and stakeholders. These sessions will focus on key sectors such as power and energy, education, and healthcare, underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships in critical areas of national development.
“There are side-event meetings for Mr President to attend, including one on power and energy. There is another on education as well as hospital management. We discussed these and, graciously, the President gave us his word that he will come to UNGA this September,” he said.
Ibrahim further revealed that discussions with the President extended beyond Nigeria’s participation at the General Assembly to broader regional concerns, particularly the need to strengthen security cooperation across West Africa.
According to him, the proposed initiative, which is expected to be pursued in collaboration with the United Nations, seeks to enhance border policing across the sub-region as part of efforts to tackle transnational crimes, improve regional security, and deepen cooperation among West African nations.
President Tinubu’s participation at this year’s UNGA is expected to provide Nigeria with another opportunity to engage global leaders, attract international partnerships, and reinforce the country’s position on key issues including economic reforms, sustainable development, regional security, energy, education, and healthcare.
