Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye Takes Over as New ECOWAS Chairman
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has emerged as the new Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), marking a new chapter in the leadership of the 15-member regional bloc.
President Faye assumed the position following the conclusion of the ECOWAS Authority meeting, where he formally took over the rotating chairmanship from Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio.
The transition places the Senegalese leader at the helm of the West African regional organisation at a time when ECOWAS continues to grapple with pressing issues, including regional security, democratic governance, economic integration, and efforts to strengthen cooperation among member states.
As Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Faye will lead discussions on key regional priorities and coordinate collective responses to political, economic and security challenges facing the sub-region.
His emergence is expected to shape the direction of ECOWAS as the bloc intensifies efforts to promote stability, deepen regional integration, and foster sustainable development across West Africa.
