U.S Launches Airstrikes on Iran as Strait of Hormuz Crisis Escalates
Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated dramatically after the US military launched a series of airstrikes on targets in southern Iran, following recent attacks on commercial vessels transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the military operation began on Tuesday in response to what it described as Iranian attacks on three commercial ships navigating the vital shipping corridor. The strikes mark a significant escalation in the already fragile security situation in the Gulf region.
Explosions were reported across several locations in southern Iran, including the port city of Sirik, Qeshm Island, and Bandar Abbas, according to Iranian media. The reported blasts heightened fears of a broader military confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
The Iranian government swiftly condemned the attacks, with its Foreign Ministry accusing the United States of violating the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reached between both countries in June. Under the agreement, the US had committed to lifting its naval blockade on Iran in exchange for Tehran reopening the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.
As part of the same understanding, Washington had also agreed to temporarily suspend sanctions on Iranian oil exports for 60 days to ease tensions.
However, the diplomatic breakthrough appeared to unravel on Tuesday when the US Treasury Department revoked the temporary sanctions waiver following a series of attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest maritime incidents began on Monday when a tanker caught fire off the coast of Oman after it was struck by what the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) described as an unknown projectile.
Iranian state television reported that the liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker was attacked after allegedly ignoring warnings, although Iranian authorities stopped short of claiming responsibility. Both the US Central Command and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declined to comment on the incident.
In another reported attack, a Saudi-flagged crude oil tanker sustained damage after missiles were allegedly fired by the IRGC, according to sources cited by Reuters.
A US official described the attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz as unacceptable and warned that they would trigger serious consequences.
Iran, in turn, vowed to take every action it considers necessary to protect its national interests and security, raising concerns that the latest exchange could push the two countries closer to a wider regional conflict.
The unfolding crisis has intensified international concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of the world’s oil supply passes, with analysts warning that prolonged hostilities could have far-reaching implications for global energy markets and regional stability.
