UNILAG Emerges Nigeria’s Top University in Prestigious 2026 Times Higher Education Global Rankings

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has been ranked as Nigeria’s number one university in the 2026 edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, solidifying its reputation as a leading centre of academic excellence and research innovation in Africa.

Released on Thursday, October 9, 2025, the latest global rankings placed UNILAG in the 801–1000 band among 2,191 institutions worldwide. The institution shares this top national position with the University of Ibadan, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to academic distinction. Covenant University and Bayero University, Kano, followed closely, both securing positions in the 1001–1200 range.

According to THE’s data, UNILAG distinguished itself in several key performance indicators, particularly excelling in research quality, where it scored an impressive 66.7 points, the highest among Nigerian universities. This reflects the university’s growing influence in knowledge creation, innovation, and scholarly impact on a global scale.

On the continental stage, UNILAG shares the 801–1000 bracket with notable institutions such as the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, Alexandria University and Cairo University in Egypt, Ain Shams University in Egypt, and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings assess institutions based on five key areas: Teaching (the learning environment), Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry Engagement, and International Outlook. Each criterion is carefully weighted to reflect the comprehensive performance of universities in delivering world-class education and research outcomes.
