“We Will Strive to Give Nigeria the Best Election in 2027, But Not a 100% Perfect One” — INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, Assures Electronic Transmission, Seeks Public Understanding on Real-Time Expectations
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has declared that the commission would strive to give Nigeria the best election in 2027, even as he candidly acknowledged the practical limitations facing the electoral body.
Speaking on Sunday at a Citizens Town Hall on the Electoral Act 2026, Amupitan emphasized that while the commission is committed to delivering a credible and transparent electoral process, Nigerians must temper expectations of absolute perfection.
He, however, added that INEC can not give a perfect election, which is actually what Nigerians are expecting.
Naija News reports that Amupitan made the declaration while addressing stakeholders and citizens on reforms and expectations surrounding the forthcoming general elections.
In a frank and reflective tone, the INEC Chairman appealed directly to Nigerians to understand the complexities of election management in a vast and diverse democracy like Nigeria.
He said, “Let me just appeal to Nigerians because I have noticed now that what Nigerians desire is a perfect election. And INEC will strive as much as possible to give this country the best election, however, we will not be able to achieve a 100% perfect election for now. As far as the electronic transmission of results is concerned, we have the capacity to transmit the results and we are going to transmit them. The only concern is real time, what is real time?”
His remarks addressed one of the most debated issues in Nigeria’s electoral process, the electronic transmission of results. While reaffirming that INEC possesses the technical capacity to transmit election results electronically and will indeed do so, Amupitan raised concerns over the public’s expectation of instantaneous, real-time uploads from every polling unit across the country.
The Chairman’s clarification signals a move to manage expectations while reinforcing the commission’s commitment to technological advancement and transparency. Observers at the Town Hall noted that his comments reflect an effort to balance optimism with realism ahead of the crucial 2027 polls.
Also speaking at the event, Amupitan assured Nigerians of INEC’s preparedness to conduct a peaceful, credible and transparent election. He expressed confidence that the commission’s experience, coupled with growing voter awareness, would significantly improve the quality of the electoral process.
According to him, the 2027 elections would be the best Nigeria has ever had.
“By the grace of God, the 2027 election will be the best Nigeria has ever had. The electorate of 2027 is more aware and understands the direct correlation between elections and national development.
“We want a process that guarantees the legitimacy and confidence people want to see in their system. When people trust INEC and their leaders, the country will move forward,” Amupitan said.
Political analysts believe that the INEC Chairman’s statements set the tone for what promises to be an intense pre-election season, with heightened scrutiny on reforms under the Electoral Act 2026 and the commission’s operational readiness.
