Aba South Council Partners NDLEA in Intensified War Against Drug Abuse, Mobilises Stakeholders for Youth Sensitisation

The fight against illicit drug use and substance abuse gained renewed momentum in Aba as the Aba South Local Government Area, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), hosted a robust sensitisation programme at the council headquarters in Aba.

The event brought together a cross-section of stakeholders, including health practitioners, political office holders, youth and community leaders, members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and civil society actors, all united in raising awareness on the devastating effects of drug abuse on individuals and society.

Executive Chairman of Aba South LGA, Hon. Obialor Anyanwu, delivered a passionate address on the dangers of drug and substance abuse, noting that the menace has become a threat to public health, security, and the future of the younger generation. He charged communities, parents, and leaders to play active roles in prevention and early intervention.

The NDLEA delegation, led by the Assistant Commander of Narcotics, Mr. Frank Nwaohamuo, reinforced the agency’s resolve through the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign. The team stressed that drug abuse destroys careers, damages vital organs such as the brain, kidney, and heart, and often leads to psychiatric breakdown and premature death.

Participants were reminded that the impact of drug abuse is not limited to the abuser alone but extends to families, communities, and the nation at large. NDLEA further emphasized that illicit drug dealers must be prosecuted and sentenced accordingly, while victims should be referred to the agency for counseling and rehabilitation.

The sensitisation programme echoed strong messages: “Avoid and Say No to Drugs,” “Drugs Kill Faster Than You Think,” and “Together, We Can End Drug Abuse.”

By the end of the exercise, there was a renewed call for collective action to protect youths and safeguard Aba’s future from the destructive grip of subs tance abuse.
