Umuahia, October 7, The Abia State House of Assembly, during its plenary session held at the Assembly Complex in Umuahia on Tuesday, unanimously resolved to lend its voice to the growing call for the release of the detained Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on medical grounds.

The session commenced with the adoption of the Votes and Proceedings of the previous sitting, following a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu, and seconded by the Honourable Member representing Aba North State Constituency, Hon. Aaron Uzodike. The motion was subsequently adopted as a true and correct record of the House.

The highlight of the day’s plenary came when the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie, raised a Matter of Urgent Public Importance concerning the worsening health condition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. He described the situation as both grave and precarious, stressing the need for immediate intervention to ensure that Kanu receives proper medical attention.

Rt. Hon. Okezie urged the Assembly to take a decisive stand by appealing to relevant authorities to act swiftly, noting that the issue transcends politics and speaks directly to the value of human life and justice.

He therefore prayed the House to:

1. Encourage the Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex C. Otti, to sustain and intensify his ongoing efforts towards securing the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

2. Enjoin all Members of the National Assembly from the South-East geopolitical zone, the leadership of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and other relevant stakeholders to continue advocating for Kanu’s access to adequate medical care and his release on compassionate grounds.

The motion received unanimous support from all Members present, reflecting a rare moment of unity across party lines. Following deliberations, the House voted in favour of the prayers and adopted the resolution, officially aligning the Abia State House of Assembly with the broader regional and humanitarian appeal for Nnamdi Kanu’s medical release.

The resolution is expected to further strengthen collaborative advocacy efforts aimed at ensuring that justice and compassion prevail in the ongoing case involving the det

ained IPOB leader.
