Her Excellency Mrs. Priscilla Otti Reaffirms Commitment to Inclusive Society as Abia Marks International White Cane Safety Day

In a moving celebration of courage, resilience, and inclusivity, the Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Her Excellency Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, once again demonstrated her unwavering support for the visually impaired community as Abia joined the rest of the world to commemorate the International White Cane Safety Day.

The well-attended event, held at Abia Hotel, Aba, brought together stakeholders, government representatives, disability advocates, and members of the visually impaired community to recognize the strength and invaluable contributions of blind persons in society. The occasion also underscored the white cane as a powerful symbol of independence, mobility, and dignity for persons with visual impairment.

Represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Affairs, Mrs. Chinenye Nwaka, Her Excellency reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to building a state where inclusion and equity remain central to governance. She emphasized that the Dr. Alex Otti-led government is consciously designing policies and support systems that empower people living with disabilities to live productive and fulfilling lives.

Mrs. Otti recalled the recent distribution of 100 white canes to visually impaired individuals in the state, explaining that the gesture was not a token act of benevolence, but a deliberate investment in the confidence, independence, and safety of beneficiaries. She urged community leaders, institutions, and the general public to eradicate stigma and foster a culture where visually impaired persons can learn, work, and navigate society without discrimination.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the National Association of the Blind, Abia State Chapter, Mr. Isaac Okwudiri, expressed profound gratitude to the Governor’s wife for her continued engagement and support. He called for the strengthening of social consciousness around disability inclusion, stressing that accessibility should be an institutional standard and not an afterthought.

Delivering a lecture at the event, Chief Agilemchukwu Cornelius highlighted the importance of the white cane beyond its physical utility. He noted that it serves as both a symbol of empowerment and visibility, helping individuals with visual impairment assert their independence and participate actively in society.

Adding a personal touch to the celebration, Miss Chioma Kalu, a member of the association, poured out heartfelt appreciation to Her Excellency for her kindness and generosity. She described Mrs. Otti as a pillar of strength and hope to the visually impaired community, commending her for identifying and supporting those with unique talents and potential. Her emotional words that “Her kindness strengthens our spirit and reminds us that we are seen, valued, and capable of greatness,” drew applause from participants.

The event climaxed with captivating performances by members of the association, who showcased their skills in music, art, and craftsmanship. The atmosphere was filled with emotion and pride as they demonstrated that there is ability in every disability.
