Abia State Launches Pioneering Free Health Insurance Scheme for Schoolchildren Across All LGAs
…as Registration of Pupils and Students Begins in Abia South Senatorial Zone, Promises Statewide Expansion
Abia State has taken a historic step toward ensuring the health and welfare of its youngest residents with the launch of a large-scale health insurance registration for pupils and students in public primary and secondary schools. The initiative, spearheaded by the Abia State Health Insurance Agency (ABSHIA), is designed to provide free medical services to schoolchildren, marking a first-of-its-kind programme in Nigeria.
The registration exercise officially commenced in schools within the Abia South Senatorial Zone and is set to be rolled out in phases to cover all 17 Local Government Areas of the state. The programme guarantees that enrolled children will have access to comprehensive healthcare services throughout the academic year and even during school holidays, ensuring no child is left behind when it comes to medical care.
ABSHIA highlighted that the initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden of out-of-pocket medical expenses on parents and guardians. Families enrolling their wards in the scheme are assured of prompt and adequate medical attention for illnesses or emergencies, without facing financial strain. By removing cost as a barrier to healthcare, the state seeks to promote healthier, safer, and more resilient communities.
The programme is entirely funded by the Abia State Government under Governor Alex Otti, who has ensured that sufficient budgetary provisions are in place to cover all medical expenses for registered pupils and students. The government’s commitment underscores a strategic prioritisation of child health and public welfare, positioning Abia as a trailblazer in inclusive healthcare initiatives.
Education leaders in the state have expressed strong support for the scheme. Mrs. Lazarus Victoria Nkechi of Akpaa Mbato Community School 1 and Mrs. Onwere Ihuoma Chituru of Ovom Ama Asaa Community School, both in Obingwa LGA, described the initiative as a bold and people-oriented step, pledging full cooperation to ensure a smooth and successful registration process.
Experts anticipate that the Abia State Health Insurance Scheme will significantly improve healthcare access for children, promote regular school attendance, and contribute to enhanced learning outcomes.
It is note that the initiative not only strengthens the state’s public health system but also aligns with broader goals of inclusive, affordable, and high-quality healthcare for all residents.
As the registration continues to expand across Abia, this landmark initiative signals a new era in child-focused healthcare policy, cementing the state’s commitment to the well-being of its next generation.
