Abia Executive Council Reviews Infrastructure Drive as Works Ministry Delivers Four Completed Road Projects, Commences Fresh Direct Labour Interventions Across 14 Strategic Locations

The Abia State Executive Council has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerated infrastructure renewal as the State Ministry of Works intensifies direct labour interventions across critical road corridors, completing four key projects and activating new sites in different parts of the state.
Briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed that the Ministry is currently executing direct labour projects at 14 locations statewide, with four road projects already delivered.
According to the Commissioner, the completed projects span multiple local government areas and are designed to improve connectivity, ease transportation challenges, and stimulate socio-economic activities in benefiting communities.
Among the completed projects is the maintenance of the 14.8-kilometre Alayi–Ugwueke Road in Bende Local Government Area, a critical route serving agrarian communities and enhancing rural-urban linkages. Also completed is the construction of the 1.1-kilometre Awomukwu–Umusokoro Road in Ikwuano Local Government Area, alongside the 900-metre Umusokoro–Umugwo Road within the same council area.
In addition, the Ministry delivered the 9.1-kilometre Umunkpeyi–Umuru–Okpokiri Road in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, further expanding access and boosting mobility for residents and businesses in the area.
Prince Kanu further revealed that new direct labour works have commenced at strategic urban and semi-urban corridors. These include the 280-metre St Patrick’s School Crescent, Agbama, in Umuahia South Local Government Area; the 1.43-kilometre access road into Umuobia Housing Estate, also in Umuahia South; and the maintenance of failed portions of the 5.2-kilometre road leading to the Ugwunagbo Local Government Area Secretariat.
The Commissioner emphasized that beyond the direct labour interventions, the State currently has 31 ongoing contract projects at various stages of completion, expressing satisfaction with the pace and quality of work across sites.
