Governing Council Breaks Historic Barrier as Prof. Ursula Ngozi Akanwa Emerges 7th Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Becomes First Female to Lead the Institution
In a landmark decision that signals a new chapter in academic leadership and institutional advancement, the Governing Council of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike has appointed Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa as the 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University. With her appointment, she makes history as the first female Vice-Chancellor since the establishment of the institution.
The announcement was formally made by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Comrade Fidelis Chukwunweike Edeh, following the Council’s 95th Meeting, where members carefully considered and approved the report presented by the Selection Panel. The decision marks a defining moment for the university community, reflecting both continuity and progressive leadership.
Professor Akanwa currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Research and Development, a role in which she has demonstrated administrative competence, academic depth, and a strong commitment to institutional growth. Her elevation to the office of Vice-Chancellor is widely regarded as a recognition of her years of dedication, scholarship, and service to the university.
She will officially assume office on March 1, 2026, succeeding the 6th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, whose tenure is set to conclude at the end of February. Her transition into the top leadership role is expected to ensure stability while advancing strategic reforms in research, innovation, and academic excellence.
An accomplished scholar, Professor Akanwa is a Professor of Educational Measurement and Evaluation. She joined the services of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in 2011 as an Associate Professor, transferring from Abia State University, Uturu. Through diligence and scholarly distinction, she rose to the rank of full Professor in 2014, solidifying her place among the university’s leading academics.
Her appointment not only underscores the Governing Council’s confidence in her leadership capacity but also reinforces the institution’s commitment to merit, inclusivity, and academic excellence. As the university prepares for this new era, stakeholders within and beyond the academic community are optimistic that Professor Akanwa’s administration will further strengthen research output, institutional visibility, and global competitiveness.
