Confusion as Katsina United Player, Ozor Chinedu Declared Dead Is Found Alive in Mortuary
Confusion and shock have gripped the football community after an 18-year-old Katsina United defender, Ozor Chinedu, who was reportedly pronounced dead following a collapse during a pre-season match, was later found showing signs of life in a mortuary.
Chinedu, who recently joined Katsina United from Kano Pillars, collapsed on the pitch during a pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina State.
The incident occurred during the Gusau/Ahlan Pre-season Cup, after which the young defender was rushed to K-Dara Specialist Hospital for emergency medical attention. Doctors reportedly pronounced him dead on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
Following the reported death, Katsina United released a condolence statement, while former clubs and other football teams, including Heartland and Kano Pillars, joined the wave of mourning and paid tributes to the young player on social media.
However, the situation took a dramatic and unexpected turn when mortuary staff at Katsina General Hospital reportedly noticed movement from Chinedu’s body.
The discovery prompted an immediate medical response, with the player transferred to the Intensive Care Unit and placed on oxygen as doctors continued efforts to stabilise his condition.
Media officer of Katsina United, Nasir Gide, confirmed the development, revealing that Chinedu had reportedly been declared dead twice before signs of life were eventually detected.
Heartland FC, one of the player’s former clubs, also confirmed the development and called on supporters and well-wishers to pray for his recovery.
As of Wednesday morning, Chinedu remains in critical condition at Katsina General Hospital, with the football community anxiously awaiting further medical updates and clarification from health authorities on the extraordinary incident.
The case has sparked widespread concern and questions, as fans, fellow players and football officials continue to hope for the young defender’s recovery.
