ABIA STATE GOVERNMENT, CARTER CENTRE OFFER FREE HYDROCELE SURGERY ACROSS THREE HEALTH FACILITIES
The Abia State Government, through the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the The Carter Center, has announced a free hydrocele surgery programme for residents affected by the condition across the state.
Hydrocele, locally known in many communities as “Ibi,” remains a prevalent health condition in several parts of Nigeria.
However, health authorities have emphasized that the condition is treatable and not permanent when proper medical intervention is provided.
As part of efforts to improve public health and eliminate the disease from the state, the Abia State Ministry of Health has scheduled a week-long surgical intervention for affected individuals.
The free medical outreach will commence on Monday, March 16, and run through Friday, March 20, 2026, during which qualified medical teams will perform hydrocele surgeries for patients at designated health facilities across the state.
The surgeries will take place at the following centres:
1. Cottage Hospital Nkporo
2. Abia State Specialist Hospital & Diagnostic Centre
3. General Hospital Aba
Residents suffering from hydrocele have been encouraged to take advantage of the free surgical intervention by visiting any of the designated hospitals within the scheduled dates for assessment and treatment.
The programme forms part of the state government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and tackling preventable diseases through strategic partnerships with global health organisations.
Health officials have also called on community leaders and residents to support the initiative by spreading awareness and encouraging affected persons to seek treatment, noting that collective action will play a vital role in eliminating hydrocele from communities across Abia State.
