Abia Health Insurance Enrolment Climbs to Nearly 270,000 as Recruitment of Medical Personnel Continues
Abia State is recording significant progress in its healthcare reform efforts, with health insurance enrolment in the state rising to an impressive 269,900 beneficiaries, reflecting growing public confidence in the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed the development on Monday, August 24, 2026, while briefing journalists at the Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu explained that the steady increase in enrolment into the state’s health insurance scheme demonstrates the positive impact of the ongoing reforms in the health sector and the growing acceptance of the programme by residents.
He further announced that the Abia State Government is continuing its recruitment of healthcare professionals to strengthen the state’s medical workforce and improve service delivery across health facilities.
According to him, the recruitment portal remains open to qualified medical officers, dental officers and consultants, providing an opportunity for more professionals to join the state’s expanding healthcare system.
The development is expected to further strengthen the capacity of hospitals and other healthcare facilities across Abia State as the government intensifies efforts to build a responsive, efficient and modern healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of the
