Abia Expands Community Healthcare Oversight, Launches Diaspora Health Fund
The Abia State Government has stepped up efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and expand access to health insurance for vulnerable residents with the inauguration of Strategic Community Health Oversight Teams in four Local Government Areas of the state.
The government has also inaugurated the Abia State Diaspora Healthcare Fund, a major initiative aimed at mobilising support for indigent and vulnerable citizens, particularly those operating within the informal sector.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, August 24, 2026, while briefing newsmen at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
According to the Commissioner, the Strategic Community Health Oversight Teams are expected to deepen community participation and strengthen oversight in the delivery of healthcare services across the affected Local Government Areas.
He further announced that the Abia State Diaspora Healthcare Fund was formally inaugurated on Saturday, August 22, 2026, as part of the state’s broader efforts to create sustainable healthcare support systems.
The fund is specifically designed to support health insurance enrolment for indigent and vulnerable citizens in the informal sector, ensuring that more Abians, regardless of their financial circumstances, can gain access to essential and quality healthcare services.
