NAFDAC Raids Five Shops in Aba, Seizes Fake Alcoholic Beverage Packaging Worth Over ₦200 Million
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raided five shops at Old Court Road Market in Aba, Abia State, uncovering a massive cache of suspected counterfeit packaging materials allegedly intended for use in the production and distribution of fake alcoholic beverages and other consumer products.
The intelligence-led operation exposed a network of suspected counterfeit packaging materials bearing the names of several popular local and international brands, raising fresh concerns about the circulation of potentially dangerous counterfeit products and the risks they pose to consumers.
Among the items recovered were suspected counterfeit labels, corks, packs and outer packaging materials bearing the names of Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, Lord’s Dry Gin, Imperial Blue, Goya Oil, Chelsea, Squadron and Seaman’s Aromatic Schnapps.
NAFDAC estimated the total value of the seized packaging materials at more than ₦200 million, highlighting the scale of the suspected counterfeiting operation uncovered in the commercial city.
The agency’s Investigation and Enforcement operatives, however, encountered threats and resistance from some traders during the raid, making the evacuation of the seized materials difficult.
Despite the challenges, the operatives proceeded with the enforcement action. The owners of the five shops were reportedly absent when the operation took place, prompting NAFDAC to place the premises on hold to prevent unauthorised access to, or interference with, the materials remaining inside.
In a further move to advance the investigation, NAFDAC invited the Chairman of the Market Union, who pledged to ensure the security of the sealed premises and assist the agency in identifying the owners of the affected shops and presenting them to the appropriate authorities.
The operation underscores the growing enforcement challenges confronting regulatory authorities in their efforts to combat counterfeit products, particularly the misuse of established brand identities on packaging materials that could potentially be used to deceive unsuspecting consumers.
Counterfeit packaging poses a significant threat to public health and consumer protection because it can make fake or substandard products appear genuine, complicating efforts by consumers and enforcement agencies to distinguish authentic products from illicit alternatives.
NAFDAC’s intervention in Aba is therefore a significant step towards disrupting suspected counterfeit supply chains, protecting legitimate businesses and safeguarding consumers from products that may not meet established safety and quality standards.
The agency’s ongoing efforts to identify the shop owners and secure the remaining materials will be crucial to determining the full extent of the suspected operation and establishing accountability for any violations uncovered during the investigation.
