Ogun Governor, Dapo Abiodun Suspends Eselu of Iselu Kingdom, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi Over Alleged Partisan Political Activities
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has suspended the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, with immediate effect over allegations of involvement in partisan political activities.
The suspension, conveyed in an official letter dated October 20, 2026, was signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, following approval by the Ogun State Executive Council.
According to the letter, the decision was taken pursuant to Section 52(1) of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law, 2021, pending a comprehensive investigation into the allegations against the traditional ruler.
The state government reportedly acted after receiving several complaints about the monarch’s conduct, particularly allegations that he had engaged in overtly partisan political activities, some of which were allegedly publicised by him.
The government maintained that partisan political involvement by traditional rulers was inconsistent with customary law and prohibited by statute. It warned that such conduct could undermine the dignity, neutrality and authority of the traditional institution while creating divisions among subjects with different political affiliations.
The administration said the suspension was necessary to protect peace, maintain public order and promote good governance in Ogun State, particularly within Iselu Kingdom, while the allegations are subjected to an official and detailed review.
As part of the conditions attached to the suspension, Oba Akinyemi has been directed to immediately vacate the palace and refrain from entering the premises for the duration of the suspension.
The monarch has also been instructed not to present himself as, or claim recognition in the capacity of, the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom while the suspension remains in force.
In addition, the government has prohibited him from wearing or using any crown, whether beaded or otherwise, as well as ileke, beaded staff, irukere and other traditional regalia or paraphernalia associated with the office of an Oba.
The restrictions are intended to ensure that the directives accompanying the suspension are observed while the state government investigates the allegations.
Oba Akinyemi has further been directed to make himself available promptly whenever he is summoned to attend any meeting or proceeding organised by the state government in connection with the investigation.
Copies of the suspension letter were forwarded to the Secretary of Yewa North Local Government and the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, for their information and necessary action.
The suspension places the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom under investigation over his alleged political involvement, with the outcome of the government’s inquiry expected to determine the next steps in the matter.
