Abia Adds Three New Roads to Direct-Labour Maintenance Programme as 44 Projects Remain Underway
The Abia State Government has expanded its ongoing road infrastructure intervention across the State with the addition of three new road projects to the Direct-Labour maintenance programme of the Ministry of Works.
The development was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, on Monday, September 14, 2026, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Giving an update on the State’s road infrastructure activities, the Commissioner disclosed that the Ministry of Works currently had 44 direct-labour road projects spread across different parts of Abia State.
According to him, none of the 44 projects was completed during the period under review, even as the State Government continued to sustain interventions aimed at improving road infrastructure, enhancing connectivity and addressing critical road maintenance needs across the State.
As part of the latest expansion of the Direct-Labour maintenance basket, three additional road projects have now been approved and incorporated into the programme.
The new projects include the construction of the 6.2-kilometre Amiyi-Obiloha Road in Isuikwuato Local Government Area, a major intervention expected to improve connectivity within the area and ease movement for residents and road users.
Also approved is the Okpurorie-Afaraukwu Road in Umuahia North Local Government Area, alongside the construction of the 1.2-kilometre Hon. P. C. Mba Road in Living Springs Estate, New Government Layout, Umuahia.
The addition of the three projects further underscores the administration’s continued focus on road infrastructure as a critical component of its development agenda, particularly in improving access between communities, supporting economic activities and enhancing the overall quality of transportation across the State.
