Abia at 35: State Govt. Celebrates 35 Years of Creation as Gov. Alex Otti Salutes Former Military Head of State, General Babangida at 85
Abia State is set to mark a significant milestone as the state celebrates 35 years since its creation from the old Imo State on August 27, 1991, by the then military administration headed by General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.
The anniversary, which commemorates more than three decades of Abia’s existence as a distinct political entity, is expected to highlight the state’s journey, achievements and aspirations for the future.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed the details on Monday, August 17, 2026, while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the week’s Abia State Executive Council meeting presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR.
Kanu also drew attention to a notable coincidence surrounding the anniversary, revealing that Babangida, the former military president who created Abia State, turned 85 on Monday.
According to the Commissioner, Governor Otti had earlier sent a birthday message to the former military leader, congratulating him on attaining the milestone age and acknowledging his role in the creation of Abia.
The Abia State Executive Council also joined in celebrating Babangida, collectively extending its congratulations and commending his foresight in creating the state 35 years ago.
The Council further offered prayers for the former military president, wishing him continued good health, sound mind and many more years.
As Abia prepares to commemorate its 35th anniversary, the occasion provides an opportunity for residents, leaders and stakeholders to reflect on the state’s evolution since its creation in 1991 and the progress recorded across different sectors over the years.
The anniversary also comes at a time when the state government is intensifying efforts to reposition Abia through infrastructure development, economic expansion and other reforms, setting the stage for a new chapter in the state’s development journey.
