The Abia State Government has officially commenced the construction of a modern fire service headquarters in Umuahia, marking a historic milestone in Governor Alex Otti’s administration’s resolve to transform the state’s emergency response infrastructure.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Homeland Security, Fire and Emergency Services, Mr. Chukwunenye Alajemba, disclosed this development on Tuesday while addressing newsmen in Umuahia.

According to him, the project was personally ordered by Governor Alex Otti to replace the decades-old and dilapidated fire station that had long outlived its usefulness.

“The Governor of Abia State has decided that the state’s emergency services should be second to none. He ordered the demolition of the old fire station because it was falling apart and had never been maintained,” Alajemba stated.

He revealed that the new complex would serve as a comprehensive emergency response headquarters, housing advanced facilities to improve the state’s capacity to respond to crises swiftly and efficiently.

The new headquarters will feature parking space for 10 modern fire trucks, a medical emergency mini-clinic, and an integrated communication and dispatch center powered by drone and satellite technology.

“This place will have the dispatch call center. The system we’re designing will allow us to track incidents in real time, using drone and satellite technology. It will also enable hospitals to prepare for emergencies even before patients arrive,” Alajemba said.

He added that the facility would operate an end-to-end emergency response network, linking distress calls directly to hospitals, ambulances, and fire units, a first of its kind in Abia State.

“For instance, if there’s an accident and there is a bone fracture case, we can geolocate a hospital specialised in orthopedic cases and inform them instantly while the ambulance is still on its way. The hospital will know the exact time the patient will arrive,” he explained.

To further strengthen the system, Alajemba disclosed that Governor Otti has ordered the procurement of new firefighting trucks to enhance operational capacity.

“The Governor actually ordered for some new firefighting trucks to be delivered about two for now, before December and more will come as funds become available,” he said.

He also emphasized that the entire project is fully funded by the Abia State Government, reflecting the administration’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and investments in the state.

“The investments that the Governor is making in Abia State require a sophisticated emergency service to protect them and build public confidence,” Alajemba added.

The Governor’s aide appealed to residents to support the government’s fire safety initiatives by equipping their homes and businesses with certified fire extinguishers.

“If you can stop a fire at its beginning stage, then you don’t have to experience much disaster. A fire can destroy a place within two to three minutes, so it’s important for everyone to have extinguishers,” he stated.

Expressing confidence in the Governor’s vision, Alajemba said the new system would position Abia among Nigeria’s most technologically advanced and responsive emergency networks.

“We are building a service that will match what you see elsewhere around the world,” he said.

Speaking on the technical details, the project contractor, Mr. Munachiso Okorocha, affirmed that the structure was designed to meet international standards.

“This structure is supposed to accommodate 10 fire trucks, and at any point in time, we will have at least seven or eight trucks ready to attend to fire hazards and other emergencies,” Okorocha noted.

He described the building as a two-story facility, a ground floor and a first floor carefully engineered to bear the heavy load of fire trucks.

“The structural engineer has taken cognizance of both dead and live loads because the trucks are very heavy,” he explained.

On the project’s delivery timeline, Okorocha disclosed that construction would last 28 weeks, with completion targeted for the first quarter of 2026.

“We want to finish before that time. As long as there is an inflow of funds, we will deliver on time and maintain quality. We are confident in the government’s commitment to this project,” he assured.

With this bold step, the Otti-led administration continues to demonstrate its focus on modern infrastructure, safety, and service delivery, ensuring that Abia State’s transformation touches every critical sector from roads and h ealthcare to emergency response and public safety.
