Abia Govt Set to Demolish Structures Blocking Waterways in Umuahia
The Abia State Government is set to commence the removal of structures erected on waterways along the Une Ehimiri axis of Ogurube Layout, Umuahia, as part of efforts to tackle flooding and protect the natural drainage system in the state capital.
The General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Mr Kingsley Agomoh, disclosed this while briefing newsmen, explaining that the demolition would begin following the expiration of the deadline issued to owners of the affected structures.
Agomoh said the natural waterways in the area had been increasingly encroached upon by buildings and other developments, restricting the free flow of water and contributing to flooding and serious disruption of the local ecosystem.
He stressed that the situation could have long-term consequences for the livability and safety of the area if urgent steps were not taken to restore the waterways and maintain an effective drainage network.
According to him, the intervention has become necessary to protect the natural waterways and ensure proper water drainage across the affected parts of Umuahia.
The UCDA boss further disclosed that important government facilities, including the National Population Commission office and the Federal Pay Office along the axis, have already been affected by developments constructed over the waterways.
He maintained that the planned enforcement was being carried out in accordance with the Development Control Regulations 2021, which prohibits developments that obstruct designated waterways and drainage channels.
Agomoh explained that the affected waterway runs from Une Isieke through Nkata, behind the Abia State House of Assembly, towards the International Conference Centre fence, through Winners’ Church and onward to Ehimiri.
He warned that fences, buildings and other obstructions along the route would no longer be tolerated, as they impede the natural movement of water and increase the risk of flooding.
The UCDA General Manager reaffirmed the administration’s determination to enforce development control regulations and protect lives and property by ensuring that Umuahia remains a safe, properly planned and environmentally sustainable city.
The exercise is expected to mark another major step by the Abia State Government towards addressing environmental challenges, restoring drainage channels and preventing avoidable flooding in the state capital.
