ABU Emerges ENACTUS Nigeria Champion, Set to Represent Country at 2026 World Cup in Brazil
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has emerged as the 2026 national champion of the ENACTUS Nigeria National Competition, earning the prestigious opportunity to represent Nigeria at the 2026 ENACTUS World Cup scheduled to hold in São Paulo, Brazil, in November.
The remarkable victory came after the ENACTUS ABU team outperformed teams from universities and polytechnics across the country at the national competition held from August 11 to 15, 2026, at the Civic Centre, Lekki, Lagos.
With the triumph, ABU secured Nigeria’s ticket to the global ENACTUS stage, where teams from 36 countries are expected to converge in Brazil to showcase innovative projects designed to tackle social and economic challenges through entrepreneurship.
The national competition brought together some of Nigeria’s brightest student innovators, with participating ENACTUS teams presenting their entrepreneurial and social innovation projects before a distinguished panel comprising academics, business leaders, entrepreneurs and industry experts.
Tomato Value Chain Project Powers ABU’s Victory:-
At the heart of ABU’s winning entry was a project focused on transforming the tomato agricultural value chain by tackling some of the major challenges confronting farmers, particularly pre-harvest pest infestation and post-harvest losses.
The project combined research, community engagement, product development, farmer training and strategic partnerships to develop practical solutions capable of improving productivity and reducing losses within the tomato sector.
The achievement was described by the Faculty Advisor of the ENACTUS ABU team, Prof. M.K. Aliyu, mni, as a major milestone for the university, the students involved and the communities that benefited from the project.
Aliyu attributed the success to months of intensive research, engagement with farming communities, product development, training, partnership building and the commitment of students, alumni, mentors, partners and the wider university community.
As preparations begin for the global competition in Brazil, he appealed for continued support from the university management to enable the team to effectively project ABU and Nigeria on the international stage.
He also expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and the university management for their sustained backing of student innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives.
The Faculty Advisor further recognised the contributions of the International Centre for Educational Research and Food Economics (ICERFE), National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS), East-West Seed Nigeria, Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), and the Department of Crop Protection.
According to him, the technical expertise, research assistance and institutional support provided by these organisations and departments played an important role in strengthening the project and helping the students transform their ideas into practical solutions with measurable community impact.
More Than 150 Team Members Took Part:-
Prof. Aliyu led the ABU delegation to the Lagos competition, alongside the team leaders and more than 150 members of the wider ENACTUS ABU team.
The student leadership team included Abdulfattah O. Omisanya as Team Leader, Augustine Onoja as Project Manager and George O. Otegwu as Secretary General.
Other members of the leadership team were Hajara Abdulmumin, Financial Secretary; Mohammad Kabiru Umar, Technical Director; and Peace John, Social Media Officer.
With the national title now secured, attention shifts to São Paulo, where the ENACTUS ABU team will face leading student innovators from around the world.
The November World Cup will provide the students with an opportunity not only to compete for global honours but also to showcase Nigeria’s growing capacity for student-led innovation, entrepreneurship and community-driven sol
utions on the international stage.
