Abia Specialist Hospital Umuahia Unveils Landmark Health Projects, Functionalises Modern Dental Laboratory at Grand End-of-Year Ceremony
The Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia, under the leadership of its Chief Medical Director, Dr. Chimezie Godswill Okwuonu, has marked a major milestone in healthcare delivery with the successful hosting of its End-of-Year Party and the functionalisation of key 2025 capital projects.
The landmark event, held on December 23, 2025, at the hospital complex along Aba Road, Umuahia, attracted top government officials, health professionals, partners, and stakeholders across the health sector. The ceremony also featured the formal functionalisation of the hospital’s state-of-the-art Dental Laboratory, a project initiated and supported by the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR.
The newly functional Dental Laboratory is equipped with modern facilities and has the capacity to manufacture artificial teeth in both acrylic and ceramic forms, dental prostheses, orthodontic appliances, maxillofacial prostheses, oral habit-breaking appliances, and other advanced dental solutions. This development significantly boosts the hospital’s dental services and reduces reliance on external laboratories.
Addressing guests at the event, Dr. Okwuonu expressed deep appreciation to Governor Alex Otti for the confidence reposed in him through his appointment and for providing the resources required to reposition the hospital. He also commended the Honourable Commissioner for Health for his pivotal role in driving reforms and progress within the facility, while acknowledging the commitment of hospital staff, management, and partners.
He explained that the Abia Specialist Hospital operates as a tertiary and specialist institution with the mandate to support secondary healthcare services across the state.
According to him, the year under review was both challenging and transformative, as the hospital had to reset operations following the relocation of its Amachara annex, a process that lasted about three months before full institutional activities resumed.
Despite the initial uncertainties, the hospital recorded remarkable achievements in 2025. Among these were the establishment of an Intensive Care Unit, the commencement of internship training for medical house officers with twelve currently engaged, and the successful accreditation for internship training of medical laboratory scientists, an unprecedented feat in the hospital’s history.
Other major accomplishments included the installation of a 150KVA solar-powered electricity system to guarantee uninterrupted power supply, the full functionalisation of the hospital kitchen with improved dietetic services for in-patients and out-patients, and strategic manpower development that produced a nephrologist, a critical care nurse, and a nephrology nurse.
The hospital also strengthened its paediatric services with the introduction of neonatal care, supported by modern incubators and phototherapy lights. Patient attendance witnessed a significant increase, rising from an average of 500–550 patients in early 2025 to over 1,100 patients by October and November. Internally Generated Revenue also tripled compared to figures recorded in December 2024.
Additionally, the dental unit was expanded with an increase in dental chairs from one to two and an upgrade in personnel from one dental doctor to two.
As part of the ceremony, several completed projects were formally functionalised. These included the Laundry Complex, commissioned by Dr. Uche Aguocha, former Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Abia State; the Special Baby Care Unit, inaugurated by Dr. Chika Ibeneme, a consultant paediatrician and pioneer of paediatric peritoneal dialysis in Abia State; the Children Emergency Unit; and the Kitchen Unit, functionalised by Hon. Magdalene Oguanusu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs.
The Dental Laboratory was formally functionalised by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ifeyinwa Blossom Uma-Kalu. The Special Baby Care Unit was also equipped with functional incubators, phototherapy lights, oxygen delivery systems, and other essential equipment for the care of premature babies and critically ill infants under one month old.
Dr. Okwuonu outlined key challenges encountered during the year, including the need for reliable ambulances, expanded in-service training for staff, and additional space for hospital expansion.
Looking ahead, he unveiled the hospital’s 2026 development outlook, which includes equipping the radiology and X-ray units with modern machines, piping and full equipping of the ICU, neonatal, and theatre units, and a lateral expansion of the hospital to accommodate at least 150 beds with a larger emergency unit.
He further announced plans to commence apheresis services, the first of its kind in Southeast Nigeria covering haematology, nephrology, and neurology-based treatments. This innovation is expected to pave the way for early steps in stem cell therapy for sickle cell disease, treatment of autoimmune conditions, and desensitisation for transplant patients.
The event also celebrated staff excellence, with awards presented to personnel demonstrating outstanding performance throughout the year, reinforcing a culture of recognition and commitment.
The Chief Medical Director concluded by expressing gratitude to the Abia State Government and the Ministry of Health for their unwavering support, offering prayers for patients, honouring staff dedication, and calling for collective optimism for a more productive year ahead.
