Abia State House of Assembly Reconvenes After Festive Break, Orders Probe into Alleged Land Grabbing and Moves to Forestall Further Tragedy on Abiriba–Ohafia–Arochukwu Road
The Abia State House of Assembly formally reconvened on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, marking the end of the Christmas and New Year recess, with deliberations reflecting its constitutional responsibility as the people’s parliament and guardian of public interest.
At plenary, the House received a petition presented by Hon. Emeka Obioma concerning the distress of the family of the late Iroabuchi Christian of Umuahia South Local Government Area. The petition alleged the unlawful takeover of the family’s ancestral land located at Okwuba Nzugbe. In a clear demonstration of its commitment to justice and due process, the Assembly declined to treat the matter lightly and instead activated its investigative mechanisms.
Consequently, the petition was formally referred to the House Committee on Boundary Matters, with a firm directive to carry out a thorough investigation and submit its findings within one month. The decision underscores the legislature’s role as a critical avenue through which citizens can seek redress against perceived injustices and have their grievances addressed within the framework of the law.
In the same sitting, the House also considered a matter of urgent public importance raised by Hon. Kalu Mba Nwoke, representing Ohafia South State Constituency. The motion was prompted by a tragic road accident that occurred on January 15, 2026, along the newly reconstructed Abiriba–Ohafia–Arochukwu Road, which resulted in the loss of two lives.
While commending the infrastructural improvement of the road, Hon. Nwoke warned that the absence of adequate safety measures posed a serious threat to road users. He stressed that modern road construction must go hand in hand with safety infrastructure to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
The House unanimously agreed with the concerns raised and resolved to mandate the Abia State Ministry of Works to urgently install speed breakers at strategic and high-traffic points, particularly along the Amaekpu–Elu–Ebem axis. The Assembly also directed the erection of appropriate road signs to guide motorists and enhance safety.
These resolutions highlight the Abia State House of Assembly’s vigilance, responsiveness, and readiness to intervene decisively on issues affecting the lives, property, and overall wellbeing of citizens, while also exercising its oversight authority to ensure timely executive action in the interest of public safety.
