Abia State Government Intensifies Road Infrastructure Drive as 46 Direct Labour Projects Progress Across the State
The Abia State Government has sustained its aggressive road infrastructure renewal programme, with the Ministry of Works recording significant progress through direct labour road maintenance projects currently ongoing at 46 locations across the state.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, July 20, 2026, at the Government House, Umuahia, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
He revealed that the Ministry has successfully completed three road maintenance projects while expanding its intervention programme with the addition of two more roads to its maintenance schedule, demonstrating the administration’s unwavering commitment to improving road connectivity and enhancing the ease of movement for residents.
According to the Commissioner, the completed projects include the maintenance of the failed section of the Nkwoagu Junction–Nkwo Mbala Road in Umunneochi Local Government Area, the second phase of the Akara Junction–Ovim Bridge Road in Isuikwuato Local Government Area, and the rehabilitation of Mazi Okoro Avenue in Obinkita, Arochukwu Local Government Area.
Prince Kanu further announced that rainy season maintenance works have commenced on the Opopo Junction–Azumini–Obehe Road, a federal road that connects the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway, as well as on the access road leading to the Obingwa General Hospital and the Obingwa Local Government Headquarters.
He added that while 26 road projects are presently under contract across the state, persistent heavy rainfall has slowed construction activities in some locations.
