Abia State Govt Rolls Out EV Mass Transit Buses for Free Intra-City, Inter-City Services
The Abia State Government has commenced the rollout of its Electric Vehicle (EV) mass transit bus service, with four buses deployed to offer free transportation to residents as part of a pilot scheme.
The service, which took off on Tuesday, December 24, 2025, is in fulfillment of a promise made by Governor Alex C. Otti during the handover ceremony of the state’s mass transit buses. Two of the EV buses have been deployed to Umuahia, while the remaining two are operating in Aba.
In Umuahia, the buses will ply two initial routes: Isi-Gate to Ubakala, and Okpara Square to Express Tower. In Aba, the designated routes include Osisioma to Aba Park, as well as Park to Ala-Oji through Port Harcourt Road.
Beyond intra-city movement, the state government has also commenced free inter-city operations, with two daily trips running between Umuahia and Aba, and return journeys back to Umuahia.
According to the government, each bus will be operated by a pilot and a co-pilot to ensure safety and efficiency. Commuters will be conveyed on a first-come, first-served basis and are advised to strictly adhere to the instructions of the bus operators to guarantee a smooth and pleasant travel experience.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, described the rollout as a learning phase for all stakeholders involved in the process, noting that minor challenges may arise at the early stage of the scheme.
He appealed to residents for patience, understanding, and support as the state ushers in what he termed a new era of public transportation in Abia State.
The EV mass transit initiative aligns with the Otti administration’s commitment to affordable, modern, and environmentally friendly transportation, while easing the burden of movement on residents, especially during the festive season.
