Abia State House of Assembly Holds Briefest Plenary as Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa Announces Demise of Mrs. Chiamaka Joyce Ibekwe, House Adjourns in Honour

The Abia State House of Assembly on Tuesday held what observers described as one of its shortest plenary sessions, as proceedings were abruptly shaped by the solemn announcement of the passing of Mrs. Chiamaka Joyce Ibekwe, wife of Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe Nnamdi Chimdi, the lawmaker representing Bende North State Constituency.
The House reconvened at exactly 1:41 p.m., commencing with an opening prayer led by Hon. Emmanuel Ndubuisi, member representing Bende South State Constituency. In keeping with legislative tradition, members adopted the Votes and Proceedings of the previous sitting held on Tuesday, February 3, 2025, affirming it as a true record and working document.
However, the tone of the plenary swiftly shifted from routine legislative business to deep reflection when the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ihuoma Emeruwa, formally notified the House of the tragic loss. He informed members that Mrs. Chiamaka Joyce Ibekwe had passed away over the weekend, a development that cast a shadow of grief across the chambers.
Earlier in the sitting, the Speaker had acknowledged the presence of members of the Students’ Legislative Council of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), who were in the gallery as part of their legislative exposure and capacity-building visit. The delegation was led by Hon. Gabriel Chukwudike and had come to observe plenary proceedings as part of efforts to deepen their understanding of parliamentary practice and leadership.
What was meant to be a day of civic learning for the student legislators quickly turned into a moment of shared solemnity, as the House transitioned into mourning.
In honour of the late Mrs. Ibekwe and in solidarity with their colleague, Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe, members of the Assembly observed a minute of silence, standing in quiet tribute to her memory. The gesture underscored the unity and camaraderie within the legislative family during moments of personal loss.
As a mark of respect, the Speaker announced the adjournment of plenary to Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., allowing members time to reflect and extend their condolences to the bereaved lawmaker and his family.
