Abia State House of Assembly Advances Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund Bill, Defers Sports Development Fund Debate
The Abia State House of Assembly has taken a significant step toward strengthening social welfare and economic support initiatives in the state as lawmakers passed the Abia State Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund Bill, 2025 for second reading during plenary.
The bill, identified as H.A.B 29 and sponsored by Hon. Ucheonye Stephen Akachukwu, seeks to establish a structured framework aimed at tackling poverty, improving support for vulnerable groups, and creating sustainable intervention mechanisms across Abia State.
Following extensive deliberations on the floor of the House, the proposed legislation was subsequently committed to the Committee of the Whole for further legislative scrutiny and consideration.
In a related development, lawmakers deferred the consideration of H.A.B 7, a bill seeking to establish the Abia State Sports Development Fund and provide for related matters.
The sports development bill, which was scheduled for consideration in the Committee of the Whole, was postponed to a future legislative date as the Assembly continues its review of key developmental legislations before the House.
