ABIA: State House of Assembly Lawmakers Push for Comprehensive Empowerment and Protection Scheme for Widows

At the plenary session of the Abia State House of Assembly held on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, lawmakers deliberated on a crucial motion aimed at improving the welfare and protection of widows across the state.

The motion, tagged H.A.M. 43, titled “Motion for the Abia State Government to Develop a Comprehensive Scheme for the Empowerment and Protection of Widows in Abia State,” was sponsored by Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe, the Member representing Bende North State Constituency.

While presenting the motion on the floor of the House, Hon. Ibekwe emphasized the urgent need for structured state intervention to uplift widows, many of whom face economic hardship, discrimination, and social neglect after the loss of their spouses.

The motion received overwhelming support from members of the Assembly, who commended the sponsor for his thoughtfulness and humanitarian concern.

Lawmakers unanimously agreed that widows deserve not only social protection but also access to empowerment programs that would enable them to live with dignity and self-sufficiency.

In their resolutions, members of the House urged Hon. Ibekwe to undertake a more detailed and comprehensive review of the proposal and re-present it as a Bill to provide a lasting legal framework for the empowerment and protection of widows in Abia State.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ihuoma Emeruwa, commended the initiative, describing it as a step in line with Governor Alex Otti’s inclusive governance agenda and commitment to social welfare reforms that prioritize vulnerable groups in society.

The motion, once developed into a Bill and passed into law, is expected to become a landmark policy framework that would institutionalize widow support, economic empowerment, and protection against societal abuse across Abia State.
