Abia State Intensifies Road Infrastructure Drive as 24 Projects Progresses Across the State
The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering quality infrastructure, with the Ministry of Works intensifying road construction and maintenance activities across different parts of the state as part of the present administration’s drive to improve connectivity and boost economic development.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Providing an update on ongoing infrastructure projects, Prince Kanu said the Ministry of Works has sustained an aggressive pace in executing road construction and maintenance projects across Abia through its direct labour programme.
According to him, between June 16 and June 29, 2026, direct labour activities were successfully carried out at 14 locations across the state. During the period under review, five projects were completed, while one new project was added to the ministry’s maintenance basket, further expanding the government’s intervention in critical road infrastructure.
He revealed that the completed projects include the construction of the 1.19-kilometre Obikabia-Umueleke Road, Phase One, in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area; the 550-metre Uzoma-Ohokobe-Afara-Ohokobe Road to Polygon Junction off Aba Road; Chief Nkoro Street to Udeagbala Road in Aba; rainy season maintenance works on Ojari Road in Arochukwu; and desilting works along Faulks Road in Aba.
The Commissioner further announced the commencement of a new direct labour project involving the construction of Green Avenue Square in Aba, describing it as part of the government’s broader effort to enhance public infrastructure and improve the urban landscape.
Beyond the direct labour projects, Prince Kanu disclosed that the state currently has 24 road projects on contract across various parts of Abia, noting that contractors handling the projects are making significant progress at their respective sites.
Highlighting the administration’s sustained focus on infrastructure renewal, Prince Kanu stated, “The state government, through the Ministry of Works, continues to push the boundaries in road construction and infrastructure development, with visible progress being made across the state.“
The latest update underscores the Abia State Government’s continued investment in road infrastructure aimed at improving transportation, facilitating economic activities, and enhancing the quality of life for residents across the state.
