FG Unveils Sweeping NYSC Reforms, Extends Orientation Camp to Six Weeks, Scraps Military Drills
The Federal Government has approved a comprehensive overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing far-reaching reforms that will significantly reshape the orientation programme and overall experience of corps members across the country.
As part of the new policy, the duration of the NYSC orientation camp has been extended from the current three weeks to six weeks. The move is aimed at strengthening the programme and equipping corps members with enhanced skills, knowledge, and values considered essential for national development.
One of the most notable changes is the removal of military drills and parade activities from the orientation camp schedule. The decision marks a major shift from the long-standing tradition that has been a defining feature of the NYSC programme since its inception.
In another significant departure from established practice, the traditional Passing Out Parade at the end of the service year will no longer be held. Instead, corps members will participate in a graduation ceremony designed to celebrate the successful completion of their national service.
The reform package also introduces a redesigned NYSC uniform, which is expected to project a more professional image while reflecting a renewed identity for the scheme.
The sweeping changes form part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to reposition the NYSC, modernise its operations, and align the scheme with contemporary national development goals. The reforms are expected to redefine the orientation experience and usher in a new era for one of Nigeria’s most enduring national institutions.
