ABSG Inaugurates Safe Schools Steering Committee to Strengthen Protection of Learners and Educational Infrastructure Amid Rising National Security Concerns
The Abia State Government has inaugurated a Safe Schools Steering Committee as part of renewed efforts to safeguard educational institutions and protect learners across the State amid growing security concerns nationwide.
The development was made public by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, on Monday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu explained that the inauguration of the Committee underscores the unwavering commitment of the Otti-led administration to guaranteeing a safe, secure, and conducive learning environment for pupils and students across all levels of education in Abia State.
He noted that the Safe Schools Steering Committee is designed to function as a robust multi-sectoral platform that will coordinate the State-level implementation of the Safe Schools Declaration.
According to him, the Committee will also be responsible for developing, supervising, and monitoring comprehensive safety and protection protocols for schools, while actively engaging critical stakeholders drawn from humanitarian organisations, civil society groups, as well as the security and education sectors.
“The Committee will also mobilise financial and technical resources aimed at creating safer learning spaces across Abia State,” the Commissioner said.
Prince Kanu further stated that the establishment of the Committee has become imperative in light of emerging and evolving security challenges across the country. He emphasized that the present administration is deliberately adopting a proactive approach to governance, prioritising prevention and preparedness over reaction.
He reassured Abians that Governor Alex Otti remains resolute in his determination to protect lives, secure public institutions, and ensure that schools in the State remain sanctuaries of learning where children can pursue education without fear, disruption, or threat.
