FIRST LADY OF NIGERIA, SEN. OLUREMI TINUBU TO VISIT AKWETE, CELEBRATE ICONIC WEAVING HERITAGE WITH GOVERNOR ALEX OTTI
Abia State is set to welcome the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, as she embarks on a visit that will spotlight the state’s rich cultural heritage and celebrate the world-famous Akwete weaving tradition.
During the visit, Senator Tinubu will be received by the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, alongside his wife, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti. The trio will tour the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society in Akwete, Ukwa East Local Government Area, where they will engage with master weavers and observe the intricate craftsmanship that has earned Akwete fabrics global recognition.
The visit is expected to underscore the importance of preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage while promoting local industries that continue to create employment and boost economic development.
Following the inspection of the weaving cooperative, the First Lady, Governor Otti, and Mrs. Otti will proceed to the Akwete Central School Field, where a grand civic reception has been organized in honour of the distinguished visitor.
The event is expected to attract top government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, women and youth groups, stakeholders, and residents from across the state. The gathering will serve as a celebration of Akwete’s enduring cultural legacy and the resilience of its renowned weaving industry.
The Abia State Government therefore call on residents, particularly those in Ukwa East, West and neighbouring communities, to turn out in large numbers to give the First Lady a warm reception and make the historic visit a memorable occasion.
The visit is widely seen as another opportunity to showcase Abia’s rich cultural assets and reinforce ongoing efforts to promote indigenous craftsmanship, tourism, and sustainable economic growth.
