“I Have Nothing to Hide, and I Have Nothing to Fear“ — Senator Shehu Buba, Submits Himself for Investigation
The senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Shehu Buba Umar, has voluntarily submitted himself to Nigeria’s security and intelligence agencies for investigation over allegations linking him to banditry, terrorism financing, kidnapping and other criminal activities.
The senator, who is also the governorship candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) for the 2027 Bauchi State governorship election, said his decision was aimed at putting the allegations to a definitive test and allowing the relevant security institutions to independently establish the facts.
Shehu Buba made the disclosure on Monday at a press conference in Bauchi, where he addressed the allegations and provided an account of the steps he and his legal team had taken in response to the claims.
According to the senator, the allegations were not entirely new, explaining that similar accusations had surfaced as far back as 2014. He said the earlier claims were investigated at the time but were found to be unsubstantiated.
He, however, noted that despite the outcome of the earlier investigation, variations of the allegations had continued to resurface over the years, particularly through different platforms and channels.
The senator said he decided to take the matter directly to the security agencies after the latest accusations went beyond ordinary social media speculation and began attracting wider attention.
“I have nothing to hide, and I have nothing to fear from any legitimate investigation,” he said.
Shehu Buba disclosed that his legal team, led by former Nigerian Bar Association President, Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, SAN, had formally petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) and Nigeria Police Force, requesting a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.
The senator said the move was intended to ensure that the claims were subjected to proper institutional scrutiny rather than being decided through social media exchanges, political arguments or public speculation.
He also challenged anyone who has credible evidence linking him to banditry, terrorism, kidnapping or the financing of criminal organisations to present such evidence to the appropriate authorities for investigation.
“Do not hide behind social media. Do not rely on edited videos, insinuations, propaganda or anonymous allegations,” the senator said.
Shehu Buba further disclosed that he had previously taken legal action over what he described as false allegations against him. He said some of the individuals whom he accused of propagating the claims were already facing legal proceedings before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The PRP governorship candidate also referred to a petition submitted to the Nigeria Police Force in September 2025, as well as another petition dated September 7, 2026, through which he sought the intervention of Interpol concerning one of the individuals his legal team believes was responsible for some of the allegations.
He said copies of his recent submissions had also been forwarded to key officials within Nigeria’s national security architecture, including the National Security Adviser, Chief of Defence Intelligence, Chief of Defence Staff and Minister of Defence.
The senator, who previously served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, maintained that the nature of his official responsibilities brought him into contact with security and intelligence agencies and personnel.
He suggested that some of those interactions may have subsequently been misrepresented or taken out of context and portrayed as evidence of relationships with criminal elements.
Shehu Buba insisted that he was prepared to submit himself to the full weight of the law should investigators establish a prima facie case against him based on credible evidence.
His position, he said, was not to obstruct any investigation but to encourage the relevant institutions to establish the truth and determine whether the allegations have any factual basis.
The senator’s decision comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 Bauchi State governorship election, in which he is seeking to challenge for the governorship on the PRP platform.
Against that backdrop, Shehu Buba alleged that the accusations could be politically motivated and designed to damage his reputation and weaken his political standing ahead of the election.
He nevertheless appealed to his supporters not to resort to confrontation or retaliation against those making the allegations.
Rather than responding with insults, threats or attacks, he urged his supporters to allow the relevant authorities to examine the claims and establish the facts.
“If there is evidence against me, let it be produced. If there is none, those who have deliberately manufactured and circulated these allegations should equally be held accountable under the law,” he said.
Shehu Buba’s submission of himself to the security agencies effectively places the allegations before institutions with the mandate to investigate terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, financial crimes and other threats to national security.
For the senator, the central issue remains the establishment of the truth through a credible and independent investigation rather than through accusations and counter-accusations in the public space.
“My conscience is clear. I have nothing to hide. I have voluntarily submitted myself for investigation because the truth should not be afraid of scrutiny,” he said.
